10 ways to tell you’ve been backpacking too long:
Jul 21st, 2008 |
- The smell of airline food makes your mouth water.
- You are excited to find a fresh full size bar of soap in the shower.
- You “steal” soap, shampoo, instant coffee, tea and sugar packets from your room.
- Your backpack weighs half of what it did when you left home.
- You have more recipes for Ramen noodles than your mom had for chicken.
- You say thank you in another language when you are traveling in an English speaking country.
- You will read an article about Brittany Spears-just because it’s in English.
- Paying more than $3 for a meal seems exorbitant.
- You sniff your clothes before putting them on.
- You argue with your travel partner over important travel decisions like who should carry the bottle of sunscreen.

Busy working from home today hence been looking round your website. Lots of good stuff.
On the Packing List, Sean do you really only have 3 pairs of boxers? If so they must be practically alive by now, do you have to hunt them down each morning, or set rat traps to capture them so you can put them back on?
I enjoyed Vietnam although we were mainly in resorts when we visited and may have been protected from the attentive locals.
On the http://www.wanderwhy.com site, I just type in the address, I don’t know what all this search engine stuff is about, I only work in IT.

Hahaha good stuff, Sean.
I like the number 5, can you post some recipes?

AF,
3 pairs of boxers? Come on, I carry 1 months worth of underwear–4 pairs. I change once a week if I need it or not.
You can’t just look “Backpacker” you have to smell it too.
Cris,
Ramen–just add veggies, tofu, or meat and chillies. Your combinations are endless… just like Mom’s chicken–which I’m craving now.
More seriously, this site gave us some great ideas: http://www.vagabondish.com/cheap-healthy-meals-for-the-hostel-traveler/

you guys, that is a great list. I’d only add: you know what people are going to ask you in a hostel before you start talking.
great list!

Ha! I love this list, it’s so true! The only one I would add, is that you DON’T take a picture because it’s just another church/monument/breathtaking view.

Great post! I’ve totally felt the same way before. Especially when I start mixing up words and making brand new ways to say thank you in an english speaking country :p
That or when you meet another person from the same home town and you freak them out by how excited you are about the local Safeway grocery store or something.
Easy decision on the sunscreen. YOU always want to carry it. You NEVER know when some emergency evacuation happens leaving you without sunscreen and a 2nd degree sunburn. Never again. Sunscreen goes in MY bag.

It’s so amusing! For me, as a Chinese, I become very excited over seeing a plate of rice when I was backpacking in Europe. I remembered my friend deliberately made friends with some Koreans (apparently they cooked rice in the hostel) and got himself a plate of rice -__-” zzz
