We are still in Laguna de Apoyo. We just can’t seem to leave! It is so beautiful here, we have just kept adding nights to our stay. The hostel we are staying at, Crater’s Edge, has free kayaks. So we have been kayaking daily in the lake, which is funny because we have kayaks at home and we have taken them out under 5 times this year.
One of the cool things I wanted to share with you is all the wildlife we have seen. I already introduced you to the poop slinging howler monkeys. What could be cooler than that? Well how about a frog as big as your head? This frog is a regular at our hostel, and apparently he has a larger big brother that we didn’t see, okay by me. He hopped his way into the hostel the other night. Apparently the cats at the hostel chase him and he just puffs up like “Hey, what are you going to do to me? Bring it on!”
Tonight after dinner we saw this lovely tarantula in a tree beside our table. Check out the hairy legs. Please do not think I was calm during this little picture taking session, I was jumping up and down screaming and Sean was zooming from like 2o feet away (Okay, a bit of an exaggeration but he WAS zooming).
The mosquitoes here are impervious to our bug spray. I actually think they like the smell and bite us more to spite us. Tonight I gave up, and actually have less bites then when I am covered in Avon Skin So Soft.
There are lizards that sound like they are barking, dogs that really are barking, and roosters that bark at night instead of at sunrise. And then there are the chickens. They run around on the sides of the streets here. They also ride on buses like this one, and so do we. I could do a whole entry on the chicken bus and its culture, but I will save that for another post.
Tomorrow we are off to Ometepe, and will be without internet for a few days. Hopefully we will not run into too many more critters before then! Goodbye Laguna de Apoyo and all your critters!
