In Puerto Jimenez, on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, we found a fantastic hotel called La Choza del Manglar. The owner,Andrew, is from Canada and really shows a love for Costa Rica and the wildlife here. On our first night, he stated if we got up early the next morning we would see some monkeys outside our room. No need for an alarm clock, because at 6am I heard the monkeys on the roof. We sat in the open air dining area/bar and watched a display in three hours that some people don’t get to experience their whole time in Costa Rica.

The monkeys ran around on the roof for a good hour, occasionally sticking their heads inside to see if we left them anything from breakfast. Sorry guys, the bananas are mine!

I walked back to our room to get something, and spotted this beautiful bird in a tree. A toucan! Up until this point in my life I had only seen a toucan on a box of Fruit Loops and his name was Toucan Sam.

I returned to the outdoor breakfast area in time to catch a beautiful scarlet macaw visiting. I had only ever seen this bird in a pet shop. Nothing beats the real deal and the excitement of hearing him flapping his wings over your head and landing two feet away from you. Unbelievable!

He hung out for a while, ate some bread, and then flew off to start his day.

I realized that this was perhaps the most beautiful morning I have ever had. I felt very lucky to see all of these creatures in such a short amount of time.

Tomorrow we are going hiking in Corcovado National Park, but I am not sure if we will be able to replicate what we experienced here as far as the wildlife goes. If you are ever in this part of Costa Rica, I can’t recommend this place enough. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous, and we spent a fantastic day doing much of nothing. A welcome change from the bus. P.S.I would like to give my husband some serious credit for the scarlet macaw picture. Good job, Sean!

I was teary eyed after the turtle entry. So envious of your experience, you are so lucky to be a part of that. Its an amazing feeling to set something free to start a new life.
A toucan, so not fair. I think Brian and I need to get our butts to Costa Rica before many of those animals disappear. I love your wildlife entries, my favorites I have to say.
I thought seeing a golden eagle in Utah was sweet, but you saw monkeys, lucky!
