What's Happening

Awesome Osa

Dec 18th, 2007 by WanderingDawn | 2

I truly do not want to sound like a broken record with my entries as of late, but I cannot say enough good things about the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. Again as I sit here writing this blog there are monkeys running around on the roof. The Osa Peninsula is not easy to get to. You must either take a bus , a ferry, or a puddle jumper plane. The roads are in terrible condition, making the journey long and bumpy. We chose the ferry route, but your ferry is not like what you envision…..it is a boat with some seats on the sides for maybe 20 people. Not for those with a weak stomach. The prices are higher here for food and lodging, more comparable to US prices, but again the tradeoff is spectacular. You can hike the park, too, staying at the ranger stations to camp at night. But you know I would not sleep in a room with an iguana, there is no way I am camping. I should have practiced at Ft.DeSoto Park before we left, but I digress.

Yesterday we got up early to catch a 6am “collectivo taxi” further into the peninsula. A collectivo means that you share a taxi with other people for a fixed rate. What a pleasant surprise to find our collectivo was a pickup truck with some wood planks draped across the back for you to sit on! Thankfully the journey was less than an hour, and we were on our way to more wildlife.

We took a hike to see a waterfall, but I think the hike TO the waterfall provided the most enjoyment. We saw three different kinds of monkeys, and heard a fourth (the howler monkey). These monkeys were a bit angry with Sean for getting too close. They started shaking the tree, hooting, and one peed. And you know what comes next….I ran the other direction, but Sean was lucky and did not get poo flung on him. Although that would have been a good blog entry. But I digress again….

These monkeys we named tarzan monkeys because they swing from the trees. Also because we just don’t know their name.

There was a beautiful group of scarlet macaws near the beach (when we got lost going to the waterfall). They are absolutely spectacular! There are so many other species of birds here, definitely a place for the serious birdwatcher.

We did finally make it to the waterfall. The water was FREEZING, but my brave husband jumped under the falls. A nice way to cool off after a hot hike.

    1. Go to your photo album, and look at the 10th photo. It’s a picture of a red kite boarding kite. In the sky above is a pterodactyl. Who knew that they still existed? Crazy!!

    2. The photo of the toucan is really amazing. Definitely frame worthy.

    3. You should have a few problem free weeks now that you helped the turtles. Your karma tank is full right now.
