Cheap Eats in the Streets

Oct 8th, 2008 by WanderingDawn | 5

One thing you notice right away about Southeast Asia are all the food stalls.  In Vietnam they seemed more prevalent than Cambodia, but in Bangkok, they are a downright staple.  This of course is good news for WS, as he can wander and eat at the same time.  I think I saw a tear in his eye when we first saw a food stall with pad thai.

Street Food

The food stalls, or carts, sell everything you can imagine.  There are soup stalls, fruit stalls, coffee stands, juice stands, grills, papaya salads.  There are carts with chicken, carts with pad thai and spring rolls, ice cream carts complete with music like the ice cream truck when you were a kid, and even carts with bugs.  Grasshoppers, anyone?

Grasshopper?

These meals are also very cheap.  A plate of pad thai will run you about $1.  Mango and sticky rice (the new love of my life) is less than $1.  And the bugs?  Well, I am not sure how much they are, but if you really want to try them, I can’t imagine they are more than $1.

Take your pic

So come to Thailand, wander the streets of Bangkok, and eat yourself silly.  WS does.

Hey.. nice to know you’re back!
For how long are you guys staying in SE Asia?
We’re in Singapore now, heading to Malaysia in 2 days and will be in Thailand soon.
Maybe if we’re lucky we could meet somewhere… :)

Mmm, I’m hungry. Sticky rice and mango sounds so good. I’m looking forward to all the street food once we make it to Thailand.

Sticky rice and mango..YUM! I fully expect that you make some for me to sample when (if?) y’all return.
As to your bragging about Thai food prices…well, McDonalds has two double cheeseburgers for two dollars!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
Always great to read your blogs and check out your fabulous pics! Try a grasshopper, you may like it (Andrew Zimmer on the Travel Channel says they’re great!)

Glad to hear WD is back and you two are continuing your travels. I love checking in on where and what you two are up to in the world.

The pad thai prices make me salivate since it is almost impossible to get anything to eat here in NYC for less than $5. Thanks and keep up the posts!

It seems like our trip was in the distant past - even though we have been back for only 6 months or so. I mention that to encourage you both to enjoy every minute of it because there is still not a lot of excitement in returning to the US with a down economy and and M-F work ethic. Have fun and keep up the posts.
