Hong Kong:Trolleys and Dim Sum
In the back of my little travel mind, I am keeping a list of places that I love. Okay, so maybe I am a little overt with my love of certain places, like Buenos Aires. I loved BA. See? I even abbreviate it like a nickname, I loved it that much. I loved Bangkok, too (BKK). And I loved Hong Kong.
Hong Kong has not made it on to the short list of places I would live because I loved it so much (like BA and BKK), but I would definitely go back.
So what is so great about HK (See? Abbreviation= Love) you ask. Could it have been that I was just ready for a change? Could it be that I feel this way about most large cities we visit because I think I was meant to live in a metropolis? I am not sure, but I will try to share my thoughts with you.
HK has a beautiful, majestic skyline set up on both sides of the water. It is striking day or night. The city is unlike any that I have ever seen in this manner, with part of the city on one side, part of the city on the other, but well connected by ferries, buses, and the MTR.
On HK Island you have the added pleasure of the trolley car. These double decker trolleys ramble up and down HK Island , and no matter how far you travel, your fare is $2HKdollars, or about $.30USD. I like cheap, and I like practical. From our hotel we could walk out and take a trolley around the island, or get off at the MTR and head to the other side.
The city is all decked out for Christmas right now, making its sparkling lights even brighter. The whole city is in the spirit, and Christmas music greeted us in every store and restaurant, even our hotel.
HK has fantastic food as well. And it is not as expensive as you would think. Great noodle and wanton soup, and dim sum. The dim sum was so much better than I have ever had anywhere. It is worth the trip just for the dim sum (Am I sounding like WS right now?).
But I don’t think you need to fly all that way just to eat dim sum. Do you like markets? Go to experience the night market, the jade market, the bird market, the flower market. Do you like to gamble? Go to visit Macau, the Vegas of the East. Do you like friendly people? Go and meet some really genuine locals. Do you like easy transport in a foreign land, with some creature comforts of home? The MTR is so easy to use, and they have one too many Starbucks in HK ,just like home.
So have I made my case? I loved HK, and I hope you will, too. I at least hope you like our photos if you can’t go. WS will drag me to the airport kicking and screaming, I know that for sure.
