Well Thank Rolf!
Many people are curious how we managed to make this trip a reality. Truthfully, what we are doing is really not that unique. There are some serious risk takers out there that give up their entire lives and set out to travel without looking back. I’m talking about the types that quite their jobs, sell their home and everything that they own, and just go. While I don’t have that kind of courage, I really admire it.
So, how do you take a long-term trip like this without doing something so drastic? Firstly, we did a lot of research. We poured over hundreds of websites looking at what others had done, and wore-out the library card taking out hundreds of travel books.
One book in particular made me realize that a trip like this is not just an unachievable dream (unless I’m dreaming right now) but indeed very possible. The book: “Vagabonding: The art of long-term travel” by Rolf Potts.
Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel
Rolf has written plenty of fantastic travel stories, but I think he is a teacher at heart and his strongest writing is in teaching the art of travel to others. This is the best of all the “How to” travel books I found in all our years of research and planning.
If you are interested in travel at all, instead of boring yourself with “American Idol” or the latest unreal “Reality” show tonight, set aside and hour and check out this presentation Rolf gave on travel at Google headquarters a while back.
Enjoy, we’ll have more notes from the road soon. Oh, and a thank you to Rolf for helping make this dream a reality.

I wish I have traveled as much as he has. I checked online and my local library does not have his book. I would buy it, but I am saving for one of my own trips.
Thanks for all the great posts! Love your blog.
